Responsibilities
Ensure that all fixed Engineering Plant maintenance activities are well planned and coordinated.
Manage the cost performance of the Low Maintenance Engineering Section, including monthly forecasting and variance analysis reporting to the Engineering Manager.
Ensure deployment of key plans and communication of key messages to all relevant maintenance personnel.
Develop, deploy and comply with all Health and Safety and Environmental policies, standards, procedures and regulations throughout Underground Maintenance and Fixed Plant Maintenance.
Spend valuable time in the field – “visible leadership” – interacting with employees.
Provide employees with a safe and healthy work environment by ensuring the provision of safe work systems; safe work procedures; adequate training and instruction; competent management; and safe machinery and equipment.
Create systems and foster the necessary collaboration to ensure the department meets monthly goals.
Underground management specified and following safety standards.
Drive the safety function of the UG Maintenance Engineering Section.
Ensures that Zero-Budget principles are applied in setting the department’s annual budget.
Report all Engineering Maintenance downtime on a monthly and year-to-date basis.
Ensure continuous analysis of downtime and elimination of defects related to corrective maintenance strategy activities.
Effective and efficient use of maintenance resources as measured by schedule compliance, PM compliance, level of scheduled versus unscheduled work and ongoing log management.
Ensure departmental performance is regularly reported to all staff by providing formal month-end performance presentations on Safety, Cost, Availability and Utilization, including key messages.
Review risk and incident identification information and provide follow-up as appropriate.
Participate in incident investigations (injury, major damage to equipment) as required to ensure corrective actions are implemented and monitored appropriately.
Ensure maintenance personnel and contractors working within the underground maintenance are qualified and have the required paperwork before starting work, competence and qualifications to work safely and provide quality maintenance services (has the authority to prevent any work from being carried out unless all requirements have been fulfilled).
Support the development and continuous improvement of critical plant asset maintenance strategies.
Supporting processes and systems – has the authority to re-prioritize work if deemed necessary.
Complete performance evaluations for direct reports and manage their professional development. (Quarter official in the house and Midyear and Year end official).
Duties and Responsibilities in EMS

Ensuring that the resources required for the environmental management system are available.

Ensuring that the environmental management system achieves the intended results.
Directing and helping people contribute to the effectiveness of the environmental management system.

Support other key management roles to demonstrate their leadership as applicable to their area of responsibility.
Qualification requirements
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or graduate trade certificate (mechanical).
Higher Education Engineering Qualifications are important.
Analytical skills, ability to think logically and clearly, strong attention to detail.
Complex problem solving skills are required.
Clear and effective communication skills in written and spoken English. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Experience and Competencies needed.
Minimum of 10 years’ progressive experience, with at least 5 years in a managerial role is considered essential.
Good knowledge of safety regulations and best practice is essential.
Previous experience in Africa or an isolated environment in similar circumstances is an advantage.
