For more than half a century, Tanzania has been a country of refuge, hosting one of the largest refugee populations in Africa. Currently, the country is hosting approximately 287,903 Burundian and Congolese refugees, most of whom arrived in 2015 as the conflict in Burundi escalated. Until now, refugees continue to live together with the communities that receive them in Kigoma region explaining many reasons and needs. In this context, the IRC provides basic protection and assistance in the areas of Security (includes Protection and Rule of Law, Protection and Empowerment of Women, and Child Protection), Health (mental and psychological health services and reproductive health), and Education.
