Tips to Increase Your Internet Upload Speed
Having slow internet upload speeds can be incredibly frustrating. Whether you’re trying to upload a video to YouTube or share a file with a coworker, waiting for your files to upload can seem like an eternity. Check out these tips to get your upload speeds back on track — no matter if you’re on a wireless or wired connection.
1. Update your OS and router firmware
These days, most operating systems and routers will update themselves automatically. But, if you haven’t restarted your computer or router in a while, it’s possible that updates haven’t been installed yet. Check to make sure you’ve updated to the latest version of your operating system and router firmware.
2. Reset your router
If your router is more than a few years old, try unplugging it for about a minute, then plugging it back in. This process is known as a “power cycle” and it can often fix minor issues with your router or get you a fresh start — meaning that you’ll get a newly-assigned IP address.
3. Check your computer’s background programs
Is your computer running slowly as your file is uploading? This can be an indication that there are too many background programs running on your computer, which can be eating up your upload speed. Close out of any programs that you don’t need and try your upload again.
4. Check Internet connection type
When using a wireless connection, make sure you’re connected to the correct network. If there’s any question about your connection, switch to a wired connection (this usually makes for better speeds overall, anyway).
5. Check for external interference
If you’re using a wireless connection, check for external interference from other devices. If you’re in a crowded area, with many other wireless devices, your connection speed might suffer. Move farther away from other devices or try an Ethernet connection for a faster, more reliable connection.
