Physical Science Grade 12 Experiments Memo 2021 Term 1

This memo outlines the experiments and information to be presented for Grade 12 Physical Science for the 2021 Term 1.

Experiments

    • First Experiment: Ball-Drop – This experiment will investigate the motion of a ball falling in air, determining acceleration due to gravity.

    • Second Experiment: Ohm’s Law – This experiment will investigate the equal proportionality between voltage and current in an electrical circuit.

    • Third Experiment: Mains Electricity – This experiment will investigate the voltage that is produced by a domestic mains system, and observation of the electric field.

Instruments

The following instruments have been identified as relevant to these experiments:

    • Lab ruler

    • Ammeter

    • Voltmeter

    • Crocodile clip

    • Resistor

    • Bulb

    • Phone charger

Safety

It is important to note that safety must always be paramount during physical science experiments. Student safety protocols should always be adhered to, and specific safety measures must be taken when dealing with mains powered circuits.

The teacher should demonstrate the correct use of all instruments and equipment, as well as provide instructions and demonstrations on the proper way to handle the materials.

Conclusion

This memo outlines the experiments, instruments and safety measures that are to be undertaken during Grade 12 Physical Science experiments in Term 1 of 2021.

By following the safety measures outlined in this memo and exercising good safety protocols, students can confidently undertake their physical science experiments and learn more about the wonderful field of physical science. 2021 TERM 1 PHYSICAL SCIENCE GRADE 12 EXPERIMENTS

As the 2021 school year begins, instructors and course coordinators wish to remind all Grade 12 Physical Science students of their upcoming experiments. This memo serves as a guide of experiments to expect this term, which will help students to plan ahead and be adequately prepared.

The first experiment will involve determining the density of a variety of materials. Students will have the opportunity to work with several common materials, such as wood, plastic and metal, in order to calculate the material’s density. It is expected that students have a thorough understanding of density and its calculation, as this will be a main component in the experiment.

The second experiment will explore the properties of waves. Students will investigate and calculate the frequency, velocity and amplitude of different waves in order to arrive at an understanding of the associated calculations. Students should also be aware of the principles and features of interference for this experiment.

The third experiment will revolve around the mathematics of force, using kinematics. Students will first analyse the nature of acceleration and velocity before moving onto analyzing the different driving forces and their respective impacts on motion. To complete this experiment, students must be comfortable with basic linear algebra and how to apply it in different scenarios.

The final experiment of the term will require the use of measurement. Using data acquired from the previous experiments, students will now measure and analyze the accuracy of their work. Furthermore, the experimental results must then be evaluated using the appropriate statistical methods. Thus, it is essential that students are comfortable with outlining their experimental setup and the significance of their observations in relation to the hypothesis and results.

We hope that this memo provides helpful insight into the expected experiments for this term and assists students in their course preparation.

Sincerely,

Grade 12 Physical Science Teaching Team
