Tanzania Limited was officially registered as a Financial Institution under the Banking Act and moved its office to Investment House, Tanzaniatta Avenue. Following a change in the control of the Central Bank of Tanzania, I&M was officially converted into a commercial bank on 1 April 1996. This change coincided with the move to modernize Koinange Street. I&M was in the process of a major restructuring exercise in 1999 to coincide with the completion of 25 years of the “I&M” name. The change was initiated by the launch of a small, but important change – a new symbol. This was intended to highlight I&M’s evolution from a finance company to a commercial bank. I&M’s head offices were moved to the prestigious I&M Bank House on 2nd Ngong Avenue, Nairobi-Tanzania. This modern and spacious building was designed and built to meet the needs of our customers. In January 2010, I&M Bank announced its entry into commercial banking in Tanzania by acquiring a majority stake in CF Union Bank Ltd (CFUB). Also participating in the share purchase was PROPARCO, the French Development Finance Institute, and an existing shareholder of I&M Bank.
