It is with great pleasure that we welcome all Grade 12 learners as they embark on their English Paper 1 journey this September 2023. This memorandum is intended to provide learners with key information to guide them during the preparation and examination of English Paper 1.
English Paper 1 consists of three main sections:
• Comprehension: The first section of the paper is the comprehension. This involves answering questions about the given texts. The main emphasis of this section is understanding and analyzing the given texts and the meaning of the text.
• Writing: This section tests learners’ abilities to effectively construct sentences and short passages. Learners will be tested on their proficiency in English grammar, spelling, punctuation and their ability to use figurative language.
• Language Structures and Usage: The final section of the paper is language structures and usage. These questions will involve grammar, syntax and vocabulary. Learners should ensure that they are familiar with the technical terms used in these questions and also make sure to read each question carefully to maximise their success.
We would like to remind learners to apply positive study habits during the period leading up to the examination.
