As the 2023 academic year approaches, grade 8 learners in South Africa are preparing for their annual creative arts exam papers. Learners and educators alike have been eagerly anticipating the newly designed creative arts exam papers and memos released by the Department of Education.
The Department of Education announced in December 2020 that the creative arts exam papers and memos would incorporate higher levels of critical thinking and evaluation skills, while also keeping a focus on student’s creativity. As part of the syllabus, students will be expected to use a variety of topics such as environment, life skills, digital media, and music to analyze, create, and present their work to their peers and teacher.
The examinations will consist of both theoretical and practical components, with the theoretical component including two written papers, both of which can be found in the PDF of the national curriculum. The theoretical component will assess the students’ understanding of the concepts learnt during their 8th grade term. This part of the examination will also help the students understand the context of the creative arts topics and assess the ability of the student to make use of the creative tools at their disposal.
Moreover, the practical component of the examination is highly important for the overall assessment of the student’s creative capabilities. During this part of the examination, students are expected to put their knowledge into practice and use their analytical and creative skills to present a portfolio of work that displays their personal capabilities.
The Department of Education has also released exam paper memorandums, which will help guide students through the examination process and ensure that they are thoroughly prepared for the tests. The memorandums are designed to help students understand each section of the creative arts exam papers and explain the various marking criteria applicable to each of them.
At the end of the examination, the scores attained by the students in the creative arts portion of the examination will be used to determine their final grade for the subject. Therefore, it is very important for the students to make the most of their time and study the PDF of the national curriculum to the best of their abilities.
We are confident that these new creative arts exam papers and memorandums will help prepare South African grade 8 learners for a successful 2023 academic year.
