It was first established as ‘Potchefstroomse Training school for Higher Education’ in 1875. The institution then changed its name to ‘Potchefstroomse Hoerseunskool’ in 1892 and soon became known as ‘Potchefstroom Gimnasium’. It has had the privilege of having famous and influential scholars in its premises such as the well-known American Astronomer, Edgar Cannon Adams, in the year 1902.
