Introduction

In Term 2 of the Grade 12 Life Orientation curriculum, students were tasked with creating a project memo in response to a problem statement. In this memo, students were required to identify the problem, analyze the situation to understand why it was a problem, explore potential solutions and make recommendations for further action. As part of the assessment for this project, teachers provided sample answers to the prompt. Below are some of the samples responses to the task that teachers have provided to help students understand what is expected.

Problem Identification and Analysis

The problem statement given was that the high drop-out rate of Grade 12 students is a significant problem, both in South Africa and worldwide. The analysis must then identify what factors are contributing to the high drop-out rate, such as lack of access to necessary resources, lack of parental support, poverty and other factors that may influence a student’s decision to leave school.

Potential Solutions

    • Provide access to necessary resources, such as textbooks and other school supplies.

    • Provide scholarships or other forms of financial aid to help students and their families.

    • Provide mentoring and support for students with difficulties in learning or managing the demands of school.

    • Ensure that learning environments are safe for students and conducive to learning.

    • Engage with parents or caregivers to encourage participation and provide support for their children.

Recommendations for Further Action

In order to ensure that all Grade 12 students stay in school and complete their education, it is important that the school and the community take proactive steps to address the problem. Recommended steps include:

    • Provide a wide range of resources and support to all students in order to meet their individual needs.

    • Create a network of mentors to provide guidance and emotional support to at-risk students.

    • Involve parents or caregivers in their child’s education to ensure that they are aware of and supportive of their child’s academic and social progress.

    • Evaluate the school’s curriculum to ensure that students are engaged, motivated and encouraged to stay in school.

    • Provide additional teacher training to enable teachers to address the varied needs of their students.

    • Establish programs and initiatives that work to reduce poverty and improve the overall health and wellbeing of the community and its citizens.
